After
an instructive visit of the city of Trento, the first stage
is dedicated to the exploration of the Vigolana highland,
a floral balcony between the Val d'Adige and the Lake of Caldonazzo
that benefits from a mild, favourable climate.
The itinerary starts from the Trentino main town, Trento (198
m), partly following the cycle path that runs aside the River
Adige to Mattarello (197 m). After crossing the hamlet, a
steep rise, the most difficult of the entire leg, takes you
to the hamlet of Valsorda (563 m). A gentler gradient takes
you to "FORTE FORNAS" (756 m), the first
military structure attributed to the Habsburg engineering
encountered en route. The next path, the "SENTIERO
DEI SOLDAI" (soldiers' path), meanders with striking
panoramic views of the Vigolana highland, a large saddle of
glacial origin. Following the local road network (a forest
road, marked SAT trail 450), you reach Vigolo Vattaro (734
m) the main village of the area, on the other side of the
highland. The "CASTELLO DI VIGOLO" (not open
for visits) built in the thirteenth century for Prince Bishops
of Trento, is one of the most charming points of the entire
first stage. Staying on the south face of the Monte Marzola,
crossing a watershed you reach the "SANTUARIO DELLA
MADONNA DEL FELES" (758 m, dating to the eighteenth
century), and then continue to Bosentino (677 m) and the nearby
hamlet of Migazzone. Descend to the provincial road and from
here turn left after a few hundred metres to reach the Begher
Hotel from where a dirt road descends into the valley of the
Mandola torrent to the Andreatta Mill (600 m). The ascent
begins once again towards Vattaro (689 m) along the path named
"SENTIERO DEI MINATORI" (miners' path), which
was once daily used by the workers to reach the mines of Calceranica
where iron sulphide was extracted. Vattaro, the most highly
developed tourist resort of the highland, is enriched by historical
palaces such as Palazzo Bortolazzi. |
